Certification

Gas Appliances:

The Gas (Safety & Measurement) Regulations 2010 require certification for all gas appliances manufactured or imported into New Zealand, and set out the requirements for certification of mass-produced appliances utilising accredited testing bodies. The Regulations also provide that ‘small production’ gas appliances (of which 21 or fewer are supplied in New Zealand per year) and imported new or used gas installations may be endorsed by an Approved Practitioner, using recognised Standards.

The endorsement process typically involves a combination of document and technical evaluation, and physical assessment of the appliance and its operating conditions. Appliances that do not have any existing form of certification generally require a high level of assessment, examination and testing, whereas appliances with existing certification (that is accepted under New Zealand legislation) may require a lesser degree of evaluation and inspection.

Gas Safely have considerable experience with the certification of both one-off ‘specials’ and small production appliances, and company principal John DeBernardo is an Energy Safety Approved Practitioner, who can assist importers, manufacturers and suppliers with the complete endorsement process, including all necessary compliance testing.

Gas Installations:

The Gas (Safety & Measurement) Regulations 2010 require that all newly constructed gas installations and those that have extensions, additions, replacement, alterations or repair carried out must be certified.

The certification process typically involves a combination of design verification and inspection and testing of the whole or part installation, with a Certificate of Compliance and Gas Safety Certificate issued at the completion of the work.

Certification is carried out in accordance with the Regulations and the joint Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 5601 - Gas Installations. Part 1 of this Standard (AS/NZS 5601.1) covers General Installations, and part 2 (AS/NZS 5601.2) covers LP gas installations in caravans and boats for non-propulsive purposes.

Existing gas installations can also be verified for safety in accordance with the New Zealand Standard NZS 5255 – Safety Verification of existing gas installations.

Company principal John DeBernardo is a licensed Certifying Gasfitter who can assist installers and users with both technical and specialised means of compliance solutions for their projects. From system design through to testing, certification and verification, Gas Safely have the expertise to provide safe, robust and compliant solutions for any gas installation.

Hazardous Area Assessments

Gas Safely provides specialised hazardous area assessments that assist a number of gas installation designers and owners to meet their individual compliance requirements.

The range of assessments available covers all aspects of gas installations including metering, pipework, venting, appliances, flues, ventilation and hazardous substances.

Licensing & Training

Employer Licensing:

Gasfitting in NZ is normally restricted to individually licensed persons however certain exemptions exist. One such exemption is the Employer Licence that enables an organisation holding a Licence to authorise any employee of the company to carry out gasfitting work under an accredited system of operation. Under an Employer Licence, the onus is on the employer to ensure that gasfitting is done safely and competently.

For many medium to large size companies who employ multiple trades such as fitters, welders and technicians to carry out gasfitting, an Employer Licence is a cost effective solution to ensure all staff have a sound understanding of both gas safety and their own responsibilities, whilst providing legal coverage for the work they perform.

Gas Safely can tailor an Employer Licence package for any size business, and many companies will be surprised to learn that the set-up and operational costs per employee are comparable to those of an individually licensed person. Using a standard set of templates we can offer solutions ranging from a basic system of operation through to accreditation, and ongoing competency and upskilling training for staff.

Training:

Gas Safely offers a comprehensive range of training services for industry.

  • Technical and safety training for gasfitters, service technicians and HVAC specialists. We have a wide range of material covering regulatory requirements, pipework and ventilation design, gas safety, combustion testing, commissioning and maintenance procedures.
  • Specialised training courses for industry groups including tailored in-house training and employer licensing training for companies.
